The troubled daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brink ley tried to kill herself days after a dysfunctional family getaway with her mom, sources told The Post yester day.
A lonely, depressed Alexa, 23, came home last week after spending nine days in Turks and Caicos with Brinkley and half siblings Sailor and Jack, the sources said.
But if this vacation was anything like a typical family gathering, Alexa probably left in worse shape than when she started.
The Piano Man’s daughter and Brinkley rarely see eye-to-eye, particularly when it comes to 60-year-old Billy. The supermodel regularly trashes her ex in front of their daughter, forcing Alexa to defend her pop-singer dad, the sources said.
“They have knock-down, drag-out fights regularly over issues relating to Billy Joel,” said a person close to the family.
Alexa Joel, who bears a striking resemblance to her dad, spent her childhood being berated by Brinkley, who makes mean comparisons between her daughter and ex-hubby, a source said.
“She would tell Alexa that her father was an alcoholic and that she had her father’s genes and that she might be an alcoholic, too,” a former family employee said.
The supermodel urged Alexa to stay slim at all costs.
In one incident, Brinkley grabbed a brownie, chewed it and spit it into a trash can, telling a 10-year-old Alexa, “This is how you eat a brownie without gaining weight,” the former employee recalled.
The icy ties between Alexa and her mom showed Saturday, when Alexa popped a handful of pills in a desperate cry for help. Brinkley told cops that she never saw the suicide attempt coming.
“She [Brinkley] stated that the victim had no health problem, and that she was not aware of how she [Joel] had been feeling,” a police report said.
A rep for Brinkley, 55, did not return messages seeking her comments.
Alexa is reportedly staying with her father. She has pulled the plug on her scheduled performance at the New York Stock Exchange’s Christmas-tree lighting ceremony tomorrow, an NYSE rep said.
“Alexa is feeling much better. She is with her family and looking forward to getting back on track,” said Claire Mercuri, a rep for the singer-songwriter.
Friends and family said Alexa was reeling last week from her breakup with on-again, off-again boyfriend Jimmy Riot, musician.
“I hope she’s OK,” Riot said outside his apartment in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. “I’ve been worried and upset.”
