McGrady making progress

Tracy McGrady boldly said his health is really improving and he believes he’s been making big progress since the Knicks acquired him a little more than two weeks ago.

But McGrady also admitted his team doesn’t appear to be moving in the same direction.

McGrady and the Knicks were walloped by the Nets last night at the Garden, falling 113-93. McGrady didn’t impress statistically, scoring just two points and sinking only one of his six attempts from the floor. But he did tally seven assists and three blocks.

“I struggled getting up and down moving and everything. But for the most part, I felt better on this back-to-back than I have in the past,” he said. “[I’m] making major steps. I’m real confident about moving forward and that’s a good sign.”

McGrady said he measures his progress by “how I feel,” saying: “And tonight, for the most part, I felt fine.”

McGrady’s improvement, however, isn’t evident in his performance, as he remains inconsistent. Three games ago, he scored 21 points, dished out eight assists and pulled down seven rebounds in a win over the Pistons. But he dropped to 13 points (albeit on 5-for-11 shooting) in Friday’s loss to Toronto, then suffered last night’s outing.

None of this is very surprising — McGrady has said he’ll have good days and bad in his comeback from microfracture surgery.

Still, he’s disappointed the Knicks haven’t played better or won more by now since he arrived.

“Very disappointed. You would like to start playing well after us being together for two weeks. You would like to have started racking up some wins. More important, you would like to start winning at home,” McGrady said. “Regardless of how long we’ve been together, you still play with a lot more energy at home than you do on the road and you’ve got to take care of home.”
