ABC looks to fill Sunday

ABC is reportedly talking to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour about taking over its prestigious Sunday morning interview show.

The network has been looking for a new host for “This Week” since George Stephanopoulos moved to “Good Morning America” last December.

Amanpour, 52, a longtime foreign correspondent, made her name reporting from war zones and international hot spots.

But in recent years, she has slowed down, doing mostly documentaries and interviews in order to stay closer to her family — including 9-year-old son Darius — in New York.

ABC officials declined to comment on the report, carried first on the Web site politico.com, that talks with Amanpour were underway.

The Sunday-morning show jobs, once a backwater of the TV news business, have become more glamorous and sought after since the late Tim Russert a dozen years ago turned “Meet the Press” into a lively, must-see hour for the political caste.

These days, in the pecking order of network news, the Sunday-morning host’s job is second in importance only to the nightly news anchor.

ABC officials said last week they expect to name a new, permanent host within the next few weeks.
