PSAL baseball roundup: Lafayette picks up first ‘A’ win in nearly a decade

Lafayette picked up its first PSAL Class A victory in nine years, holding off Sheepshead Bay, 7-6, as James Sierra and Dionnys Hernandez each drove in two runs. Ralphy Rosa picked up the win in relief with four innings of two-run ball.

“It’s really nice to win the first one,” said coach Nick Chapman, who recreated the program there years ago after it had been temporarily disbanded. “I really preached to my kids about doing it the right way. This is a reward for a lot of hard work.”

Lafayette, which has won 14 PSAL championships and is the alma mater to former Mets legend John Franco, moved up to the ‘A’ after going 11-5 in Brooklyn B South last year. Chapman isn’t ready to call the Patriots a division contender, not with seven of his nine starters sophomores or freshmen.

“This is the year we’re going to take our lumps,” he said. “We have a lot of youth and we have a long way to go to beat the Telecoms, Madisons and Fort Hamiltons.”
