CHSAA baseball roundup: Moore improves to 2-0

One day after earning the win on the mound, John Baggs came up big at the plate and in the field for Moore Catholic in a 7-3 victory against Xavier Friday afternoon in Travis.

Baggs, who allowed one earned run on three hits in four solid innings in a 4-2 win at St. Raymond’s Thursday, was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and the sophomore turned a critical doubleplay in the top of the third inning.

Chris Ahearn scored three runs, Jojo Coughlin had a pair of doubles and drove in three runs and Frank Smith and Joe Todaro also drove in runs for Moore (2-0), which jumped out to a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second inning.

Senior Neil Connelly, who picked up the save in one inning of work Thursday, got the win Friday, allowing three earned runs on six hits, striking out five and walking five. Danny DeAngela picked up the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits, striking out three and walking four. Dom Casella, the offensive star against St. Raymond, earned the save, striking out the side in the seventh.

Stephen Vorvolakos had two RBIs and James McCool, who gave up three unearned runs in two innings of relief, also drove in a run for Xavier (1-1).

St. Joseph by the Sea 7, Mount St. Michael 6: St. Joseph by the Sea rallied from a four-run deficit to beat Mount St. Michael on Nick Galli’s RBI single in the eighth inning Friday afternoon in Huguenot. The Vikings (2-0) managed just three hits, but capitalized on 13 walks, two hit batters and three errors. Starter Anthony Battaglia allowed four earned runs, striking out eight and walking two in six innings. Marco Santomauro earned the win in one inning of scoreless relief.

Michael Perrotta was 3-for-3 with an RBI, Mike Iglesias had a double and a two-run triple and Christian Fadul had a pair of doubles for Mount (0-2). Sal Kulka allowed one earned run, walking two and striking out one in 1 2/3 inning of relief to get the loss.

All Hallows 2, St. Peter’s 1: All Hallows scored a pair of unearned runs to defeat St. Peter’s in both teams’ CHSAA opener Friday afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx. Joe DiMauro had a pair of hits, including an RBI single in the sixth inning, Frank Esposito allowed both runs on two hits through four innings, while Donnie Pagano tossed two innings of scoreless relief for St. Peter’s.
