WTC welcome mat for NYU

Civic leaders downtown are trying to lure at least one piece of NYU’s massive expansion to the World Trade Center, where they say a new, 40-story tower the university wants to build would be welcomed with open arms, The Post has learned.

“I absolutely believe NYU should come downtown and build on the Tower 5 site at the World Trade Center,” said Julie Menin, chairwoman of lower Manhattan’s Community Board 1.

Menin said she and others raised the possibility of building at the current Deutsche Bank site during a recent meeting of Borough President Scott Stringer’s task force on the university’s plans.

NYU last night held a public forum on the expansion plan, which would add up to 2.2 million square feet of new space in its Greenwich Village core, including a 40-story tower on a block the university owns along Bleecker Street.

At a rally last night, residents called on NYU to find sites outside their neighborhood for its expansion.
