The finest work on Broadway

The mood at Sunday night’s Tony Awards would have been far different had jihadist Faisal Shahzad succeeded in detonating the car bomb he parked in the heart of Manhattan’s Theater District last month — and not just because of the loss of life that would have resulted.

Indeed, the entire theater industry might have faced economic ruin.

Thus, it was wholly fitting that The American Theatre Wing took the time Sunday to recognize the officers of the NYPD’s Midtown North and South precincts — Broadway’s Finest, so to speak.

The precincts were awarded Tony Honors for Excellence in Theatre in recognition of their efforts to keep the Theater District orderly and secure.

The honor is richly deserved.

For sure, the producers, theater owners and union bosses who run Broadway have reason to be appreciative.

They remember the Times Square of the late ’80s and early ’90s — and they know that their bottom line depends on sustained NYPD efforts to keep their customers safe.

It was good of them to say thanks.
