Photos show bizzare altar at Jared Loughner’s home

These photos show the sick surroundings of the man authorities believe shot Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 19 others in Tuscon, Ariz.

In the backyard of Jared Loughner’s house is a brick wall with a pot holding a skull surrounded by decaying fruit. Nearby sit candles at what appears to be a makeshift altar.

The strange setup wasn’t the only thing investigators found at Loughner’s house.

They also discovered handwritten messages in his basement safe bearing the chilling words: “Gifford,” “My assassination” and “I planned ahead.”

Also inside the safe was a letter on Giffords’ congressional stationery thanking Loughner for attending one of her “Congress on your Corner” events at a mall in Tucson in 2007.

It was at an event at a shopping center that Loughner allegedly opened fire Saturday.

Loughner is charged with one count of attempted assassination of a member of Congress, two counts of killing an employee of the federal government and two counts of attempting to kill a federal employee. More charges are expected.
