Visitors toss thousands of dollars into 9/11 memorial pools

Visitors to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum have tossed thousands of dollars worth of coins into the twin pools, even though it’s against the rules.

The memorial tallied $2,735 in “cash found on property” in 2014, according to its latest financial filings.

The sum “includes anything retrieved from the reflecting pools,” said spokesman Michael Frazier, but he added, “We ask visitors not to throw anything into the pools.”

The pools are regularly cleared of coins and leaves to prevent a drainage problem.

Visitors also dropped a lot of cash on souvenirs sold in the gift shops and on carts at the memorial plaza.

The museum reported $5.3 million in profit from the sale of merchandise in 2014, from its opening in late May through December.

Nearly 2.7 million people from around the world visited the exhibits in its first year.
