Colonial Willamsburg thinks 9/11 is an ‘iconic’ American moment

Colonial Willamsburg ran its first-ever Super Bowl ad on Sunday, and sparked outrage by including images of 9/11 destruction.

The spot includes video — in reverse — of iconic American moments, including President Obama’s inauguration, the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima, a women’s suffrage march and the North Tower collapse.

“When you reflect upon our sacrifices, our breakthroughs and, yes, our heartbreaks,” narrator Tom Brokaw says in the ad, just as the 9/11 footage airs, “where did our fight come from? Our strength. Our heart. Where did our spirit first take shape?”

The shocking images didn’t go unnoticed by TV viewers who have generally been shielded from the worst 9/11 footage.

“Welcome to Colonial Williamsburg. That’s where we churn butter. And that’s our edit bay where we play the towers falling in reverse,” “Saturday Night Live” player Taran Killam mockingly tweeted.

The historical site and tourist attraction stopped short of apologizing, but acknowledged the “jarring” images.

“We understand and respect that some of the images depicted in the ad are jarring,” said Joe Straw, spokesman for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

“Our ad is meant to walk viewers backwards through time, challenging them to reflect on how our collective history and struggles shape who we are as Americans today. We cannot forget our sacrifices or our tragedies even as we celebrate our accomplishments.”
