Hulu plans to release virtual reality series

Hulu is set to debut a virtual reality series that lets users experience what it’s like to walk out on stage as the star of a huge concert.

The series, a partnership with tour operator Live Nation, is one of several new initiatives announced Wednesday by the online TV service.

The VR series is being made for users of the new Samsung Gear VR headset and will not be available as part of its TV service.

While no deals have been finalized, Live Nation stars on tour this summer include Beyoncé, Rihanna and Bryan Adams.

Hulu, owned by Fox, Disney and Comcast, said it is also starting a new documentary unit, with plans to broadcast “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week” from A-list movie producer Ron Howard. The film will air on Hulu after its theatrical run.

Hulu, which said it will hit 12 million users by May 31, is set to offer live TV channels from Fox and ABC in the future, a move aimed at targeting consumers who don’t take pay-TV services.

Peter Naylor, Hulu’s ad sales boss, announced the live-content development at Madison Square Garden during its annual upfront presentation.

Hulu’s presentation included Hugh Laurie from “House,” Aaron Paul from “Breaking Bad” and Mindy Kaling from “The Office,” each of whom has shows on the service.

Kaling, who stars in Hulu’s “The Mindy Project,” joked from the stage about her willingness to work with marketers.

“I integrate … I will deliver a baby with a Pabst Blue Ribbon, if you want me to,” she said.
