Tom Coughlin not doing ‘very well’ after Giants exit

Tom Coughlin is trying to get used to his first football-free offseason in a dozen years.

The former Giants coach told “Fox and Friends” on Monday morning he is not retired, and is struggling to adjust to his new life after he parted ways with the Giants after the season.

“Not well, not very well, to be honest with you,” Coughlin, 69, said while discussing his Jay Fund Charity.

“It’s a difficult thing. I don’t care who you are, or how long you’ve been doing it. I’ve been doing it a long time, so you know you get yourself into the rhythm your whole life is, your calendar of your life is based on football, about the seasons, whether it’s in season or out of season. You have a schedule that you follow. So, there’s some adjusting for me to make.”

Coughlin twice interviewed for the Eagles’ head-coach opening and appeared to be the favorite before backing out of consideration. Giants owner John Mara said the team had talked to Coughlin about taking another position in the organization after offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo took over as head coach.

Mara is still interested in bringing Coughlin back, perhaps in a personnel role.

“He’s been away, but I do plan on talking [to Coughlin],” Mara told Newsday on Friday. “There’s still hope.”

While Coughlin did not specifically discuss a Giants return, it certainly sounds as if he still wants football to be a significant part of his life.

“I’m not [retired]. … I don’t like that word, you know the retired word,” Coughlin said. “I’m way too young for that — you know what I mean.”
