Eliot Spitzer and Lis Smith break up

It’s splitsville for Eliot Spitzer and his political spin-mistress squeeze, Lis Smith: The two have gone their separate ways after a two-year romance.

Spitzer and Smith have fueled a spate of often-cringe-worthy gossip since December 2013, when The Post caught the then-married ex-governor sneaking repeatedly into Smith’s Soho apartment building.

The affair was an embarrassment to then-Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio, for whom she was a spokeswoman.

Smith, 33, resigned. Spitzer, 56 — a millionaire many times over thanks to a 2014 inheritance from his real estate titan father and his own deals — divorced his wife, Silda, with whom he has three children.

From that time on, Spitzer and Smith continued to make all the wrong headlines.

Spitzer was caught sucking Smith’s toes during a topless hot tub romp in Montego Bay, Jamaica, in January 2014.

There were romantic trips to Paris, displays of tonsil hockey at various restaurants and sporting events, and even rumors of an engagement as recently as this past Valentine’s Day.

The couple was seen last in February passionately kissing at a Knicks game.

But now it’s all over between the former “Love Guv,” who resigned in disgrace in 2008 after being identified as “Client No. 9” in a prostitution scandal, and Smith, who is now a spokeswoman for Democratic presidential contender and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley.

The split was amicable, said Spitzer spokeswoman Lisa Linden.

“Given how hectic both their work and travel schedules are, they decided a few weeks ago to take a break in their relationship,” Linden said.

“They remain very close and continue to care for each other,” Linden added.

Spitzer and Smith first became chummy when she worked as a communications aide for his political comeback bid — a failed campaign for city comptroller in 2013.

Silda, 57, had grimly stood by him when he announced he was resigning as governor after being ensnared in the hooker scandal.

She scored a $7.5 million cash payout in the divorce plus support to maintain her lifestyle.

Neither Spitzer nor Smith was available for comment last night.
