Why Ben McAdoo wore a too-big suit and everyone’s laughing

Ben McAdoo might be a good fit for the Giants, but his suit sure wasn’t.

Internet commenters were hot under the oversized collar — or up in loose-hanging blazer arms, take your pick — over McAdoo’s goofy, untailored attire for his introduction Friday as the Giants’ new head coach.

There’s a reasonable two-pronged explanation, though: 1. The 38-year-old has lost a lot of weight — “about 60 pounds” — since he purchased the suit (“I’m in better shape now”). 2. His final negotiations with the Giants about succeeding Tom Coughlin happened in such rapid fashion, he didn’t have the time to purchase a new suit to fit his slimmed-down frame.

None of this halted the stream of alarm and insult McAdoo received on social channels:

There’s a flip side to this. Some see McAdoo’s fashion ignorance as a good sign of a function-over-form coach who will spend his time in the film room, not the mall. McAdoo said as much: “You don’t want to be running around wearing a suit. It’s not why you get into this business. You’re more comfortable in sweats and a hoodie, but this isn’t bad either.”
