Chrissy Turner will undergo a mastectomy next week — and she’s only 8 years old.
The Utah native was diagnosed this month with an extremely rare breast cancer, accounting for just 1 percent of all breast cancer cases.
“I was kind of scared to figure out what it was,” she said Tuesday morning on “Good Morning America.”
Fortunately, despite the rarity of the cancer — secretory breast carcinoma — her prognosis is good.
“It is very treatable,” said Dr. Brian Bucher, Chrissy’s physician at Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City.
She is scheduled to have surgery next week.
The devastating diagnosis comes after both of Chrissy’s parents have fought cancer themselves. Her father, Troy, is still battling non-Hodgkin lymphoma and her mother had cervical cancer.
“We’re just going to keep fighting,” her mom, Annette, told a local ABC affiliate in Utah. “Doing everything we can to smile every day and laugh every day and carry our head high and do our best to overcome this.”
A friend of the Turner family is trying to raise $100,000 to help with medical costs and raised $21,120 in a week.
