Man goes on joyride during blizzard, gets DWI

A Brooklyn man went beyond just breaking the blizzard traffic ban and went for the full house of bad-driving conduct.

Aleksey Tsvetkov, 36, of Bergen Beach, blew through red lights and sped down snow-covered streets in the early hours Sunday when cars were supposed to be off the road — and he did it all while he was drunk, police say.

“We had an individual that made a series of bad decisions. I counted five,” said NYPD Chief of Department James O’Neill.

“First of all, he decided to drive after the ban was put in place. Then he decided to speed. Then he decided to blow through two red lights. And then, last but not least, he decided to drink before all this. So we locked him up for DWI, also,” O’Neill explained.

Tsvetkov’s rampage came to an end when cops nabbed him near the corner of 86th Street and Avenue U at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Cops said they saw him speed through two red lights before pulling him over, and later found multiple bags of marijuana in the vehicle.

He refused to take a Breathalyzer test and was charged with DWI, reckless driving and possession of a controlled substance. His license was also yanked.
Tsvetkov was held on $2,500 bail, but his family said they planned to pay it.

His attorney, Tony Mirvis, defended his behavior.

“The only reason why he was driving that night is because he received a call from his wife that their parents’ power went out,” Mirvis said.

“He thought there could have been a fire,” the lawyer added. “He denies that he was under the influence and will return to court to fight these charges.”

In total, the city issued 25 summonses to people who violated the traffic ban during the storm, which kept everything but emergency vehicles off the road from 2:30 p.m. Saturday through 7 a.m. on Sunday.

Cops also responded to 484 vehicle accidents, according to city police officials.

Meanwhile, the FDNY also answered 6,000 emergency calls.
