First look at Piazza 9/11 jersey, safe in Mets lovers’ hands

The Mike Piazza 9/11 jersey is officially safe in the hands of Mets fans who want to share the artifact with the world.

Anthony Scaramucci, one of the fans who purchased the jersey, showed it off on social media on Monday in a photograph with trainer Ray Salomone.

“True @Mets fans with the @mikepiazza31 jersey on its way to the @baseballhall,” Scaramucci wrote on Twitter.

Scaramucci, Tony Lauto, Jim McCann of 1-800-Flowers and an anonymous female business partner agreed to pay $365,000 for the jersey last week to end a dramatic bidding process. Goldin Auctions had been offering the jersey on behalf of a private collector who purchased it from the Mets three years ago.

Piazza wore the jersey on Sept. 21, 2001, when he hit a dramatic two-run home run against the Braves in the first game in New York City following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The jersey will be sent to Cooperstown this summer when Piazza is inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 24. Citi Field and the 9/11 Memorial Museum also will display the jersey, though final details of the plan still are to be worked out.
