One of the few bright spots in what has otherwise been a terrible summer for television ratings has been USA’s Mr. Robot. The show hasn’t exactly been a ratings smash in its own right, but nonetheless, there’s no denying its place as one of the boldest and most addictive new programs to debut in quite some time.

Fans of the series had been counting down the days, hours and minutes until the airtime of tonight’s Season 1 finale, but the USA Network has just announced that they are postponing the finale in the wake of the senseless gun violence tragedy that occured in Virginia earlier today. The following statement on the subject was just released:

“The previously filmed season finale of Mr. Robot contains a graphic scene similar in nature to today’s tragic events in Virginia. Out of respect to the victims, their families and colleagues, and our viewers, we are postponing tonight’s episode. Our thoughts go out to all those affected during this difficult time.”

Variety is reporting that the USA Network will now air the Mr. Robot Season 1 finale next Wednesday, September 2, at 10 p.m.

Sadly, this is not the first time that a television network has pulled a season finale due to an incident of gun violence. Back in 1999, the WB postponed airing the Season 2 finale of Buffy The Vampire Slayer for nearly two months in the wake of the Columbine killings. And in 2012, the SyFy network delayed the third season finale of Haven after the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut.
