New gem in the Bronx: NYC’s 14th public golf course

New York City on Tuesday saw the grand opening of its 14th public golf course at Ferry Point in The Bronx.

With magnificent views of the Manhattan skyline, the Whitestone and Throgs Neck bridges and the East River from almost every hole, the championship-caliber course at Ferry Point can host major tournaments — but will serve regular New Yorkers on a daily basis.

And employ many New Yorkers, as well.

It could mean a windfall for the city, too: perhaps $200 million in revenue from a championship event.

In for the opening was links legend Jack Nicklaus, who designed the course. He said, “I hope it’s a source of pride for New Yorkers and a special experience for those who visit.”

The city’s 13th course, the Robert Trent Jones Marine Park Golf Course in Brooklyn, opened more than half a century ago, thanks to Robert Moses — the “Power Broker” notorious for bulldozing his critics.

Behind the new course is a man who gets things done another way: Donald “Art of the Deal” Trump.

Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point is part of a city-funded redevelopment project. But the site — a former landfill — stagnated for decades, mired in political battling.

Trump stepped in to make it happen. He won a 20-year lease on the spot back in 2011, agreeing to spend $10 million to build a 7,400-yard course and (opening next year) a 12,000-square-foot clubhouse.

This is far from the first time Donald Trump has stood up to get a big job done for New York, but it may be the sweetest yet.
