Everyone knows that Snoop Dogg loves nothing more than weed. But who knew that British people rank a close second in his book?
The Doggfather famously took David Beckham to Roscoe’s House of LA’s Chicken and Waffles in his E! reality show “Father Hood,” wrote the track “Wet” especially for Prince William’s bachelor party in 2010 and, in a recent interview with the Guardian, claimed that the Queen’s endorsement helped him avoid deportation from the UK during the ’90s.
So when The Post put in a quick phone call to the Dogg Pound to talk about his new album “Bush” (out Tuesday), the sound of my English accent was enough to inspire the 43-year-old O.G. to adopt a hilariously cartoonish English accent that made him sound like a camp “Downton Abbey” star.
Hello, Snoop. Let’s talk about the album “Bush.” After becoming a Rastafarian as Snoop Lion, this feels like it’s all about going back to your real roots — California.
[Adopts plummy accent] Oh yes, California is all over the record — from top to bottom. [Reverts to normal voice] It’s a feel-good record, and you know that if it feels good, it must be good for you. Me and Pharrell [Williams, the album’s producer] were planning on making a record like this a year ago, but time didn’t permit it until now.”
Was it hard to get Stevie Wonder to guest on “California Roll,” the opening track of “Bush?”
Stevie is just a telephone call away. We’re all family out here. [Jumps back into accent] Every time we’ve worked together, it’s been a splendid occasion. We’ve always come up with masterpiece records, and I believe that this is another one to add to the collection.
Were you able to pass any of that famous Uncle Snoop wisdom on to young Kendrick Lamar, since the two of you have guested on each other’s albums?
I told him to always challenge himself and be willing to listen. Always put yourself on a level where you’re eye-to-eye with everybody. Never play bigger than anybody because you never know when it’s gonna be over. He grew up watching his West Coast O.G.s, like Ice Cube, Eazy-E and Snoop Dogg. He had a pretty good blueprint to work with, and that’s why he’s doing it so well.
Judging from your contribution to the Season 5 “Game of Thrones” mixtape, it seems as though you’re a big fanboy.
Most definitely. When they asked me to do the track, I was more than honored because I’m truly a fan of the show. I would have done it for free, but they gave me some money on top of it, so I was like, “F - - k it, let’s do it!” I watch it for historic reasons, to try to understand what this world was based on before I got here. I like to know how we got from there, to here, and the similarities between then and now.
Um, OK. So what parallels have you drawn between this fictional TV show, and the modern world?
That kings still rule and a bitch f - - ked everything up, in every situation!
Hmmm. I see. Well, when it comes to the future of your own music, is there anything left for you to do after nearly 25 years in the rap world?
I had a long talk with Quincy Jones about this just a week ago. He’s like my musical father. There are some things that I want to do musically that I think will change the face of the game. I can’t tell you what they are yet, but just know and understand that we’ve been talking for a lot of years. And lately, those conversations have gotten deep.
I look forward to hearing the outcome of that.
