Dog left to die in trash pile making strong recovery

She was pawing at death’s doors, but now this Phoenix is going to rise up!

The ailing pup was left to die in a pile of trash on Bergen Street in Brooklyn last Monday, but cops swooped in and rushed the mangled mutt to Animal Care and Control.

But she needed a lot of assistance and was transferred to Sean Casey Animal Rescue, a no-kill shelter in Windsor Terrace that specializes in bringing animals on the brink of death back to life.

“When she arrived, she was pretty much lifeless. You could see the whites of her eyes. She just had nothing left in her,” the shelter’s founder, Sean Casey, told The Post.

They had to quickly make a decision about whether or not to save her, and blood test results showed she had a chance of pulling through.

Phoenix, who Casey believes is a 2-year-old Shih Tzu mix, was hooked up to an IV to rehydrate her and wrapped in a heated blanket to warm her up.

Within an hour, she started to respond.

“Eventually, she wound up sitting up,” 34-year-old Casey said. “Although she’s improved a lot, she’s not completely out of the woods yet.”

The shelter encouraged its nearly 47,000 followers on Facebook to keep Phoenix in their thoughts as they continued to treat her.

Casey thinks his new furry friend is at least 5 pounds too skinny after not eating for weeks, but she is slowly starting to gain weight.

“I’ve only had one other dog come in that was that bad. I’ve seen dogs that were not nearly as bad as her that didn’t survive this. So the fact that she’s gotten this far is amazing,” Casey said.

Her caretakers think she’ll need at least two months of rehab before she can start looking for her forever home, but that she’ll pull through it.

“She’s going to need a lot of work to get her back into shape just to walk, but I have no doubt that she will get there,” he said. “She’s a fighter.”
