Top Steve Lavin recruit may now leave St. John’s

LOS ANGELES — Brandon Sampson, the crown jewel of fired coach Steve Lavin’s 2015 recruiting class, plans to wait to see who St. John’s hires before deciding on his future plans, a source told The Post.

Multiple reports quoted his high school coach, Jeff Jones, as saying Sampson had opened up his recruitment when Lavin was let go Friday afternoon and he instantly heard from double-digit schools interesting in the talented guard, but also said the Red Storm will still be under consideration.

The 6-foot-4 Sampson, a consensus four-star recruit ranked in the top 50 of the country from Louisiana, picked St. John’s over California and USC in January. At the time of his commitment, Jones said playing at Madison Square Garden in a major media market like New York City “ultimately” won Sampson over. He has only verbally committed, not signed.

The status of Lavin’s other two prospects, guards Samir Doughty and Sammy Barnes-Thompkins, is unknown at the moment.
