Tourist snaps a selfie after illegally climbing Brooklyn Bridge

Amid all the talk of heightened security in the city as July Fourth approaches, a tourist managed to climb the Brooklyn Bridge — to take a selfie.

David Karnauch, an engineering student at the University of Tennessee, on Tuesday posted this pic of Sunday’s stunt on Instagram.

“You could just get on a beam and it actually had handrails on the left and right side, and I just walked across the bridge and turned around to take a picture,” he told WNBC-TV from his home in Chattanooga, Tenn.

“I don’t recommend anybody else do it. It’s not a smart thing to do because I know they take security on the bridges seriously.”

The image quickly went viral — but police were not impressed, calling his selfie-stick trick “irresponsible and illegal.” They didn’t say if he would be arrested.

“The person most endangered was the individual, whose goal seems to be bringing attention to himself,” said John Miller, the NYPD’s deputy commissioner for counterterrorism.

Karnauch calls himself an “adventurous spirit” on his LinkedIn page.
