Upper East Side co-op sues to save trees from gas line work

The power saws stopped just in time outside of an Upper East Side co-op that is suing to keep Con Edison from doing work the residents claim could kill four 80-year-old trees outside their front door.

The utility had started slicing the street to install gas mains in front of 40 E. 88th St. at 8:30 a.m. Friday, with workers marking out a large portion of the sidewalk running across the front of the building, even as a co-op lawyer appeared in Manhattan Supreme Court to obtain a temporary restraining order. The two sides are scheduled to see a judge Monday.

“We are hopeful of reaching a resolution that is satisfactory to everyone,” a Con Ed spokesman said.
