City Council bill would send drivers instant traffic ticket emails

A bill being introduced Thursday in the City Council would send instant notifications via email to motorists who get a summons on their vehicle.

Councilmember Helen Rosenthal (D-Manhattan) said she is proposing the measure to build on a system already in place for commercial vehicles.

Motorists could voluntarily register to get the emails, which would also cover moving violations.

“Our expectation is that people will become more aware of the number of tickets issued — and with awareness be more responsible drivers,” Rosenthal said in a statement.

If the bill passes, the emails will be flying. The city collected more than $500 million in parking ticket revenue last year.
