School custodians getting a raise in new contract

School custodians are cleaning up.

The city’s 5,000 school cleaners and handy men reached a nine-year $211.1 million contract this week, which includes a $1,000 bonus and 18 percent raises.

De Blasio called the agreement “another step forward in ensuring respectful and productive relationships with the employees who serve New York City and its people.”

“This agreement is affordable for the City and its taxpayers, while still providing workers with the fair wages they deserve,” he said.

Workers belonging to 32BJ unions will receive eight percent raises in back pay from 2008 to 2010 to match raises given to other municipal workers, and 10 percent in raises through 2016 from Local 891, according to the de Blasio administration.

Administration officials said there were no new costs for the city as part of the contract thanks to an estimated $21 million in health savings built into it.

Custodian union president Robert Troeller was pleased with the deal.

“Due to numerous budget cuts, these workers have become increasingly productive,” he said. “It’s good to see these men and woman recognized and rewarded for their work.”
