Axing Saturday mail means (Net)flickering romance

Wait a minute, Mr. Postman!

The US Postal Service plans to stop delivering mail on Saturdays — which comes as a buzz-killing blow to New Yorkers who count on their weekend “Netflix date.”

The cash-strapped agency says axing weekend service saves $2 billion annually, which is necessary in the era of e-mail and e-commerce.

But ending Saturday deliveries squashes potential romance.

“If you have a movie date on Saturday — and you don’t get your movie [in the mail] — you’re screwed,” said Noel Polanto, a 22-year-old student from Roosevelt Island.

He added, “If you wait for like a month and it doesn’t come, it really blows.”

The new plan, which doesn’t affect packages and could begin as soon as August, is part of the agency’s effort to become profitable after losing $16 billion last year, Donahoe said.

The changes come after the agency started reducing hours, closing facilities and cutting staff two years ago.

“It’s urgent. This is too big of a cost savings for us to ignore,” Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said yesterday.

The move had no immediate impact on Netflix stock, which actuially went up a point yesterday to $185.

Netflix spokesman Joris Evers declined to comment.
