Ed Fountaine’s Stakes Spot Plays

The Very One

Gulfstream Park, eighth race. Grade 3. Purse: $100,000. 1³/‚ˆ miles, turf, fillies and mares. Post: 4:05 p.m.

LOWDOWN: It took Todd Pletcher a while to figure out Seanchai after she was transferred to his barn last fall, but in her third start for her new trainer, the daughter of English Channel stretched out to 1³/‚ˆ miles over this turf course for the first time and led every step, romping by 3 1/2 lengths. Seanchai is stepping up from an optional claimer allowance to a graded stakes, but she has a touch of back class and in her current sharp form can handle the rise.

THE TAMPA BAY

Tampa Bay Downs, ninth race. Grade 3. Purse: $150,000. 1 1/16 miles, turf, 4-year-olds and up. Post: 4:25 p.m.

LOWDOWN:Doubles Partner was a bit of a bust finishing second as the odds-on favorite in the Sunshine Millions Turf at Gulfstream making his first start of the year, but he figures to move forward off that race, has a huge class advantage over this field, and he won this race two years ago.

MACDIARMIDA

Gulfstream Park, 10th race. Grade 2. Purse: $150,000. 1³/‚ˆ miles, turf, 4-year-olds and up. Post: 5:05 p.m.

LOWDOWN: Amira’s Prince, after spending his early career in Ireland, has come with a strong run through the stretch to win both of his starts in the U.S., both going a distance over this turf course. He’s in the hands of Hall-of-Famer Bill Mott, with Hall-of-Famer John Velazquez in the saddle, so there is no reason to suspect Amira’s Prince won’t continue to advance up the ladder.
