Sandy aid expedited

The federal government put $250 million in emergency funds to repair New York’s Sandy-ravaged roads and bridges on the fast track, officials said yesterday.

The vast majority of the money will go toward repairs in the city and Long Island.

The West Street and Battery Park underpasses — both of which heavily flooded during Hurricane Sandy — are both in line for funding.

The money is part of the $60 billion in aid recently approved by Congress, said US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

The city’s Department of Transportation alone requested $900 million in federal aid to repair transportation projects damaged by the storm.

“We expect this to be the first of many allocations from the [US] Department of Transportation,” Sen. Charles Schumer said.

The money is arriving faster than is usual, beating times for relief aid for both Hurricane Katrina and Tropical Storm Irene, Schumer said.

“It will alleviate a lot of the budget pressure from the storm,” he said.
