A day after offending some Jews by stepping out in Hasidic-like garb, disgraced designer John Galliano appeared to rethink his wardrobe.
The designer, who was fired by Dior for an anti-Semitic rant. sported a pair of baggy camouflage pants, with a baggy jacket, thick-rimmed glasses and a wool cap as he took his dog for a walk in Manhattan yesterday.
The uniform change came as New Yorkers continued to question his motive for wearing an ensemble that included curled “peyos”-like sidelocks, with a long, dark coat and hat to pal Oscar de la Renta’s Fashion Week show Monday.
Galliano’s defenders contended that the designer — convicted in France of making racist slurs after a 2011 rant in which he declared, “I love Hitler!” and made statements in support of the Holocaust — often dresses in such Hasidic-inspired couture.
But non-fashionistas weren’t buying it.
“It is absolutely insulting how he mocks the Jewish people,” said Williamsburg resident Margaret Vakowsa, who is Catholic.
“It makes my heart hurt. He should not have a place in New York. The people who go to Fashion Week shows should boycott him.”
“He said he loved Hitler,” noted warehouse owner Jacob Weiss. “I think he did this to insult.”
The Anti-Defamation League sprang to Galliano’s defense, saying that “his dress is always eccentric” and that his get-up bore absolutely no resemblance to Orthodox Jewish attire.
It also claimed that Galliano has “spent hours” meeting with rabbis and Holocaust survivors since his conviction.
Galliano’s spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg, did not respond to requests to elaborate on his atonement efforts.
