Web Big Mac attack on BK

A hacker chomped into Burger King’s Twitter page yesterday — embedding a McDonald’s logo into the profile and serving up an order of embarrassment for the fast-food chain.

The cyber-intruder took control of the site for about 1½ hours, replacing Burger King’s logo with golden arches – the world-famous symbol of hamburger giant McDonald’s.

The “Have it your way” company regained control at around 1:30 p.m., and the feed came back at about 9:30 p.m.

“We apologize to our fans and followers who have been receiving erroneous tweets about other members of our industry and additional inappropriate topics,” said Bryson Thornton, BK’s director of global communications.

McDonald’s spokeswoman Ofelia Casillas said her company had no knowledge of the online break-in: “This incident has nothing to do with us.”

The hack job was a double-edged spatula for BK, which picked up thousands of Twitter followers at the price of being the tweeted butt of burger jokes. Some of the funny nuggets included:

• “Somebody needs to tell Burgerking that `whopper123’ isn’t a secure password.”

• “This is why Burger King should use 2 sauce authentication.”

• “We caught one of our employees in the bathroom doing this …” according to one tweet, which included a photo of a man injecting himself with a syringe.

• “If we’ve learned anything from the @BurgerKing hacking, it’s that Social Media Managers sleep in on holidays.”

• “dear burger king, u cannot have it ur way on twitter -mcdonalds.”

• “They may be hacked, but when was the last time ANYBODY talked about @BurgerKing this much?”

• “Is the Hamburglar behind this?”
