Officials concerned Fire Island ocean breach causing localized flooding

Elected officials on Long Island are expressing concerns about a widening breach on Fire Island in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

They are concerned that the breach, which allows ocean water to flow into the Great South Bay, is causing localized flooding on Long Island’s south shore.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and others are holding a press conference Wednesday. They want the state to request the US Army Corps of Engineers close the breach known as Old Inlet.

An Army Corps spokesman says no request has been made.

Meanwhile, Stony Brook University coastal expert Charles Flagg says the breach has not impacted local flooding.

The breach has grown from about 108 feet in early November to 1,171 feet by the end of February.

Flagg says it needs further monitoring.
