Coney Island’s world-famous Cyclone roller coaster, Luna Park, the Scream Zone and Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park are all set to reopen Sunday following millions of dollars in Hurricane Sandy-related repair work and upgrades.
All of Coney Island’s seaside rides needed to have their electrical and motor systems overhauled after being overwhelmed by massive flooding and sand.
“Considering the damage, it’s fantastic that we completed the repairs in time [for the new season],” said Valerio Ferrari, president of Zamperla USA, which runs Luna Park, Scream Zone and other boardwalk attractions.
“I can’t way for Sunday to arrive, so we can finally open the park gates again,” said Ferrari, adding he hopes to unveil some new boardwalk rides later this summer.
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will kick off the official opening of the new amusement season with the annual “egg-cream christening” of the Cyclone roller coaster, and then the first 100 patrons ride free.
Other Coney Island mainstays are reopening in the coming months, including the New York Aquarium later this spring, Coney Island USA’s famous sideshows in May and Nathan’s Famous’ flagship Surf Avenue store by Memorial Day.
And later this summer, the new Steeplechase Plaza will unveil an historic wooden-horse carousel that the city rescued from auction and fully restored – along with spectacular new lighting for the landmarked Parachute Jump.
Meanwhile, the Brooklyn Cyclones — the Mets’ minor-league affiliate — will play their home opener at MCU Park June 18 versus the rival Staten Island Yankees.
Nathan’s boardwalk store will open Saturday and host a qualifying round for its annual July 4 hot-dog eating championship.
