Hit-run monster Acevedo pleads not guilty to manslaughter charges

The hit-and-run driver who killed an expectant couple and their unborn baby in a tragic Brooklyn crash earlier this month pleaded not guilty to manslaughter charges today.

Julio Acevedo, 44, nodded to his family when he was lead handcuffed into a courtroom.

Defense attorney Scott Brettschneider pleaded, “Not guilty,” during the very brief Brooklyn Supreme Court proceeding.

“We’re disappointed in the upgraded charges,” defense attorney Kathleen Julian said outside the courtroom. “We don’t think they have enough evidence to prove it.”

Julian also likened the case against Acevedo to the conviction of David Ranta, a man who spent 23 years in prison but is expected to be released today after his conviction is overturned.

Ranta was investigated and prosecuted as the Hasidic community demanded quick justice.

If he’s convicted Acevedo faces up to life in prison for the crash that killed Nachman Glauber and his pregnant wife Raizy, prosecutors have said. Prosecutors have said he was doing nearly 70 miles an hour when he crashed into the couple’s livery cab.

The couple’s unborn son was delivered prematurely but died the next day.

Prosecutors have said Acevedo sped recklessly past other cars and a fire truck before the deadly Williamsburg crash.
