Pat Kiernan is completely at home being the most influential outsider in the New York newspaper business.
The longtime morning anchor at NY1 admits he’s still shocked by the popularity of his daily “In The Papers” segment — a morning TV survey of the day’s most-noteworthy print stories.
“It is sort of crazy that the thing I am best known for is for me to take other people’s content and re-report it,” he told The Post yesterday in LA where he is promoting a new TV reality game show on CNBC on which he will be appearing.
Reporters in New York reluctantly peek to see if Kiernan has mentioned their stories in the daily round up — and curse him quietly if they failed to catch his eye.
Kiernan has since turned the segment into his own small business, employing a staff of four to run the website “Pat’s Papers,” which highlights stories from publications across the country.
His entrepreneurial experience will get a workout on the panel of a new business reality series, “Crowd Rules,” on CNBC.
The show— similar to “Shark Tank,” but with a live studio audience— pits small business owners against each other in pursuit of a $50,000 investment.
Kiernan calls himself “a broadcaster looking to stretch your legs a bit.”
But he insists there is no plan in place to abandon NY1 or his newspaper segment.
“But I have said before that when Alex Trebek decides to retire, I would like them to consider me for the [“Jeopardy”] job.”
