Ortiz’s pride — and profanity

The Issue: Red Sox star David Ortiz’s exclamation, “This is our f–king city!” after the Boston bombings.

***

It was a travesty for David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox to resort to profanity (“Sox Star Swears by Beantown Courage,” April 21).

I also found it sad that the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Julius Genachowski, applauded Ortiz’s words.

I’d like to know what parents say when little Johnny or Janet ask about the profanity.

I always rewind to how different things were when I was a teen.

I stand with Boston as well, but I need not become a vulgarian to demonstrate it.

No one is more sympathetic to the good people of the Boston area or more despondent and outraged over what occurred than me. But Ortiz’s remark did nothing to aid in the healing of that region, and it was an affront.Oren Spiegler

We have a major-league baseball player who insults the citizens of Boston by using an inappropriate adjective to describe their city, and the fans cheer him.

New York City has a ship of fools running for mayor, and nobody stepping up to oppose them.

Our president and attorney general can read and spell the word terrorism, but do not know its meaning. We need help.Skip McGrory
