Yankees’ Cano aggravates foot in first base mishap

DENVER — Considering how many tests have revealed serious damage to Yankee body parts since the end of last season and how many games the stars have missed, the club was thrilled to hear Robinson Cano’s mishap covering first base didn’t cause further complications to his right foot.

Following the Yankees’ 3-1 victory over the Rockies at Coors Field in which Cano went 2-for-4 with a homer and reached 1,500 career hits, the club’s best player said he was fine after reaggravating the toe he initially injured last homestand against the A’s when he fouled a ball off the foot.

“Everything is good,” Cano said.

Cano aggravated it in the third inning yesterday when he slipped covering first base on Eric Young’s attempt at a bunt single.

The foul ball could have been part of the reason Cano entered yesterday’s game in a 5-for-27 (.185) funk.

“I was chasing everything and that’s not what you want to be doing,’’ Cano said.

The funk extended to 5-for-28 when he grounded out in the first inning. His two-out single in the third was No. 1,500 of Cano’s career. He is one of 29 active players with that many hits. Cano’s towering homer in the fifth off Brooklyn native Adam Ottavino upped the Yankees’ lead to 3-1. It was Cano’s 186th career blast and moved him past Paul O’Neill into 17th place on the all-time Yankee list.

“It means a lot but you have to forget about it now,’’ Cano said of reaching 1,500 hits.
