So what is Marty Ball?
New Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg arrives with a reputation as a pass-happy coordinator with West Coast offense roots. But how does he view his offense?
“We’ll do whatever it takes to win the next ballgame,” he said. “We don’t care how we get it done, running or passing or who gets the credit. That old-school mentality is important to me. The talent is important to me. The hard work and preparation is important to me. There is no substitute for the hard work and preparation. Those things are important to me. If you’re missing one of those, you put a cap on yourself. … If you’ve got all three, then you’re in pretty good shape.”
As a head coach or coordinator, Morninweg has finished in the top 10 in the NFL in scoring eight times, passing nine times and rushing six times. He presided over the No. 1 offense in the NFL in 1998 with the 49ers and 2008 with the Eagles.
Mornhinweg is not afraid to throw the ball deep either. Since 2006, the Eagles lead the league in passing plays of 25 yards or more with 219. He believes there is a direct correlation between yards per attempt and winning.
“Unlike the old West Coast, we’ll go after people down the field if we can,” he said.
As for quarterbacks, he has had five that have gone to the Pro Bowl under him — Brett Favre, Steve Young, Jeff Garcia, Donovan McNabb and Michael Vick.
