Malcolm X grandson killed: report

Malcolm X’s grandson Malcolm Shabazz, who in his youth served time in a juvenile facility for setting a fire in which his grandmother died, has been killed in Mexico, according to a published report.

The Amsterdam News reported his death, saying that the family and a close friend had confirmed it.

The newspaper said family members confirmed that Shabazz was in Mexico and that he died but were unsure of the circumstances of his death.

The newspaper said there were reports that the 28-year-old died early yesterday from injuries he suffered after “he was thrown off a building or shot as he was being robbed in Tijuana.’’

The Amsterdam News cited a twitter post by Terrie M. Williams, whom it identified as a close friend of the Shabazz family, in which she noted that the US Embassy confirmed his death.

“I’m confirming, per US Embassy, on behalf of family, the tragic death of Malcolm Shabazz, grandson of Malcolm X,’’ Williams asserted in the tweet.

“Statement frm family 2 come,’’ the tweet continued.

Shabazz spent four years in a juvenile facility after pleading guilty to starting the fatal fire in his grandmother Betty Shabazz’s apartment when he was 12.

The Amsterdam News said he told the paper years later that he had not set the fire.
