NFL: Mangini to join 49ers staff

The 49ers have agreed to terms with former Jets and Browns coach Eric Mangini to be an offensive consultant for the NFC champions, a person with knowledge of the negotiations said yesterday.

With a defensive expertise and experience as an assistant on that side of the ball, Mangini might help game plan for opposing defenses in the new role. San Francisco lost 34-31 in the Super Bowl to the Ravens in February after missing scoring chances in the waning moments.

Mike Adams, 23, an offensive tackle for the Steelers, has been hospitalized after being stabbed in the stomach during a robbery attempt. He was injured early yesterday on Pittsburgh’s South Side. Agent Eric Metz said Adams was stabbed while trying to stop three or four men from stealing his truck at his home. Metz said Adams had surgery and no vital organs were affected.

NBA: Grant Hill announces his retirement

Seven-time All-Star Grant Hill is retiring from the NBA after 19 seasons, ending an injury-plagued career that included an Olympic gold medal. The 40-year-old forward, who made the announcement last night, averaged 16.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.2 steals during a career that included stints with the Clippers, Pistons, Magic and Suns. He spent last season with the Clippers, appearing in 29 games.

Former Nets guard Mookie Blaylock was upgraded to serious condition a day after his SUV crashed head-on into a van and killed a woman. … The Kings will introduce former Golden State assistant Mike Malone, a one-time Knicks assistant, as their head coach tomorrow.

GOLF: Feng leads ShopRite by three strokes

In Galloway Township, N.J., Shanshan Feng, who last year became the first Chinese player to win an LPGA Tour title and a major event, shot a 4-under 67 to grab a three-shot lead heading into the final round of the ShopRite LPGA Classic. The round gave the eighth-ranked Feng a 6-under 136 total.

In Stockholm, Mikko Ilonen will take a two-shot lead over Sweden’s Alexander Noren into today’s final round of the Nordea Masters.

MLB: Harper on DL, Strasburg has slight strain

Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper has been placed on the 15-day DL because of bursitis in his left knee. The move was retroactive to May 27. Meanwhile, the team said an MRI exan showed a slight strain in Stephen Strasburg’s lat instead of his oblique. The team hopes the right-hander can avoid the DL.

AUTOS: Logano wins Nationwide at Dover

Joey Logano led the final 34 laps to win the Nationwide Series race at Dover International Speedway in Delaware. Logano has won the last three Nationwide races at Dover.
