Taxed to last place

Few New Yorkers will be surprised that a recent Tax Foundation study ranks New York with the highest state and local tax burden (“A Fargo State of Mind,” Editorial, March 30).

The news is not good for job creators, either. New York is dead last in state business tax climates. Yet despite this excessive tax burden, New York has the highest debt per capita in the country. Our state government constantly looks for more ways to extract money from citizens.

Our state has a long road back to economic prosperity. One place to start is to end double dipping — state officials collecting both state salaries and public pensions. Unfortunately, our governor has broken his promise to end this irresponsible practice.

John Marshall once said: “An unlimited power to tax involves, necessarily, a power to destroy; because there is a limit beyond which no institution and no property can bear taxation.” We are rapidly approaching that limit.
