Fire tears through Queens home, killing one

A fire tore through the second floor of a private house in Queens today — killing a man inside, authorities said.

The blaze broke out around 8:10 a.m. in the home on 268th Street and 77th Avenue in the Glen Oaks section, the FDNY said.

“The flames and black smoke were coming out the windows on the side. I called 911,” said neighbor Sylvia Glaubach.

Sixty-five firefighters battled the flames and pulled the 63-year-old victim from the attic of the house, the FDNY said.

“The fire was on the second floor, in the living room and the bedroom,” said Battalion 53 fire chief Ed Carney.

It took nearly 30 minutes for firefighters to get the fire under control.

The man, along with an injured firefighter, was rushed to Long Island Jewish Medical Center where he died from his injuries, the FDNY said.

“He was the head pressman for the NY Times for many years,” Harry Glaubach said of his neighbor. “It’s a shock.”
