Councilman McCaffrey dies

Veteran Queens Councilman Walter McCaffrey, who represented Woodside, Sunnyside and Long Island City for 16 years, died yesterday after a brief illness. He was 64.

The son of Irish immigrants, McCaffrey joined the local legislature in 1985.

He was the lead sponsor of legislation requiring security cameras at ATMs, as well as banning adult establishments from middle-class neighborhoods. He also helped establish the first homeless shelter for war veterans.

Funeral and memorial services will be announced later this week.
