Yahoo! unveils first major logo change in 18 years

Yahoo! has unveiled its first major logo change in 18 years.

In preparation for the announcement, Yahoo! has been running a “30 Days of Change” campaign for the past month showcasing different designs each day.

The firm said it wanted a logo that “stayed true to our roots… yet embraced the evolution of our products.”
Yahoo! boss Marissa Mayer, who became CEO 14 months ago, was heavily involved in the redesign.

In a post on Tumblr, the micro-blogging site bought by Yahoo!, she said she “rolled up my sleeves and dove into the trenches” one weekend this summer with a logo design team.

She wrote: “We spent the majority of Saturday and Sunday designing the logo from start to finish, and we had a ton of fun weighing every minute detail.

“We knew we wanted a logo that reflected Yahoo! – whimsical, yet sophisticated. Modern and fresh, with a nod to our history. Having a human touch, personal. Proud.”

One of the last changes was to “tilt the exclamation point by nine degrees, just to add a bit of whimsy.”
Mayer also acknowledged it had been a major decision.

“We hadn’t updated our logo in 18 years. Our brand, as represented by the logo, has been valued at as much as $10 billion. So, while it was time for a change, it’s not something we could do lightly,” she said.

The redesign is part of a continuing makeover Yahoo! has undergone since the former Google executive took over.
