City asks for ‘reform’ delay

City lawyers yesterday asked a judge to hold off on the reforms she ordered to the NYPD’s stop-and-frisk policy, warning that the restrictions could lead to a huge spike in crime.

The letter to Manhattan federal Judge Shira Scheindlin says her ruling this month against stop-and-frisk was “rife with errors of law” and that retraining cops to institute the reforms would take them off the street and “certainly jeopardize potential crime victims.”

The city, which is appealing Scheindlin’s decision, also says her plan for a pilot program to outfit patrol cops with “body worn” cameras could prove a huge waste of time and money, and also poses a “possible impingement on privacy rights of the public.”
