The 11-year-old son of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Hafez, has reportedly goaded the US to strike Syria in a Facebook post.
“I just want them to attack soooo much,” Hafez al-Assad allegedly wrote, “because I want them to make this huge attack of beginning something that they don’t know the end of it.”
Whether the profile is real or not has not been confirmed — but The New York Times has put forward evidence backing its authenticity.
The Times notes it has been “Liked” and commented on by people who appear to be the children and grandchildren of senior members of the al-Assad regime including those of the Deputy Vice President and former defense minister.
While Hafez lists his college as Oxford University and says he is employed by Barcelona FC — perhaps schoolboy dreams — he also lists himself as a graduate of the Montessori school which has been confirmed as true.
The adolescent’s post also includes a call for Syrian national unity against the American threat.
“Maybe they will destroy the army, but they will never destroy these remnants and little bits of resistance.”
“It’s who we are, we were born to fight and rist, we will fight them everywhere until they get out if they came in the first place.
The United States is poised to launch a limited military strike on Syria, White House officials told reporters, although the UK Parliament rejected such a move over fears the West could end up bogged down in a military crisis similar to the Iraq War.
“We will fight them everywhere until they get out if they (come) in the first place.
“No matter how hard they try and get us out of our holy land they will never succeed. It’s where we come from it’s where our roots and predecessors come from”.
“Syria forever and everr,” the post ends, accompanied by four ‘V for victory’ emoticons.
