An inside look at Day 5 of the U.S. Open

NOT SO HOME SWEET HOME

John Isner, who beat Frenchman Gael Monfils Thursday, 7-5, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7) was not happy that he played the match in front of a pro-Monfils crowd on U.S. soil. Fans chanted Monfils’ name and cheered when Isner made errors. Isner, America’s best hope for a male champion for the first time since Andy Roddick won it all in 2003, wasn’t the only one surprised.

Numerous players took to social media Thursday night to express their surprise an American didn’t have much support at the U.S. Open.

Caroline Wozniacki, the No. 6 seed, who will play her third-round match today, tweeted: “Can’t believe the crowd is screaming Monfils Monfils, when he is playing an American at the Us Open!”

American Bradley Klahn, who lost in the second round on Thursday was a bit harsher.

“Also, that Armstong, anti-American crowd was embarrassing…the pro US atmosphere and crowd make it special for Americans to play in NYC,” Klahn wrote.

UPSET TIME

Sabine Lisicki (pictured), the No. 16 seed who made the finals at Wimbledon last month and was thought to be a challenger here, took a step back with a 6-4, 7-5 loss to 24th-seeded Ekaterina Makarova. More known for her doubles game, Makarova won the women’s doubles title at the French Open this year.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

‘You don’t want to hear my issues, believe me. Everybody has their own issues. The girls differ from the guys. Girls are a little bit more emotional. We’ll just leave it at that.’

— Jamie Hampton after losing 6-1, 6-3 to Sloane Stephens.
