Giants-Packers moved out of prime time

The Giants aren’t a prime time team this year.

The NFL has flexed the 2-6 Giants’ Nov. 17 matchup with the Packers out of NBC’s Sunday night slot in favor of an AFC West showdown between the unbeaten Chiefs and 7-1 Broncos. The Giants-Green Bay game at MetLife Stadium will be played at 4:25 p.m. and broadcast on FOX.

Implemented prior to the 2006 season, the “flex scheduling” provision gives the league the right to switch the Sunday night game. The provision cannot be used prior to Week 11, and between Weeks 11 and 16, the NFL must make the change 12 days prior to the affected contest. For Week 17, the league can wait until six days before the game, to ensure the game has playoff ramifications.

The Giants’ Dec. 1 game against the Redskins in Washington is scheduled to be a Sunday night game and potentially also could be flexed out.

The Giants have had their share of history with the provision, as the very first game the NFL flexed into the Sunday night time slot was a Giants-Bears game in November 2006. That game was made famous by Devin Hester returning a missed Jay Feely field goal 108 yards for a touchdown in a 38-20 Chicago win.

In 2011, the Giants’ Week 17 home game against the Cowboys, which decided the NFC East, was flexed into the Sunday night time slot. The Giants won that game 31-14 before reeling off four straight playoff wins to capture their second Super Bowl in five years.
