Laughing all the way to prison

He may have lost his freedom, but a crooked ex-director of a Bronx nonprofit hasn’t lost his humor.

After getting slapped with a five-month prison sentence yesterday, David Griffiths, 67, was asked by the judge when he wanted to start serving his time.

“Is never an option?” Griffiths asked.

Griffiths, former Bronx Assemblyman Peter Rivera’s one-time law partner and campaign treasurer, was convicted last year of obstruction of justice and making false statements for providing bogus documents during an FBI probe of the now-defunct Neighborhood Enhancement for Training and Services Inc.

He was also convicted of mail fraud for trying to scam a $400,000 grant from the state Dormitory Authority by denying the group, which was funded with taxpayer dollars by Rivera, was under investigation.

Manhattan federal prosecutor Carrie Cohen said Griffiths deserved at least 18 months behind bars, noting that the feds were looking into “financial shenanigans” that included $35,000 in “loans” that Griffiths gave himself.
