Antonio Cromartie in doubt for Steelers game with knee injury

The Jets may be without one of their best players this week.

Cornerback Antonio Cromartie suffered a non-contact knee injury and was taken for an MRI exam, according to a source. The source said the injury looked as if it could be serious, but was not sure of the extent. ESPN reported it was a hyperextended knee. That would mean the Jets could be without Cromartie for Sunday’s game with the Steelers, but he would not miss a long period of time.

The Jets cannot afford to lose Cromartie for any period of time. He is the team’s No. 1 cornerback and they already have been playing without first-round pick Dee Milliner. If neither Cromartie nor Milliner can play Sunday, it would leave the Jets with Darrin Walls and Kyle Wilson as their starting cornerbacks.

Cromartie has been dealing with a hip injury all season, but he was listed Thursday as being limited in practice with both a hip and a knee injury.

A week after making remarks that made headlines, injured wide receiver Santonio Holmes kept his answers short during his weekly media session.

The press conference lasted just five minutes and featured three “no comments” from the mercurial receiver.

Holmes was asked how he thinks the Steelers will react to their 0-4 start based on his time there and he said, “no comment.” He then was asked if he was upset with the way his comments were reported last week and said, “no comment.” The final one came when asked if he spoke to quarterback Geno Smith (who turned 23 on Thursday) about what he said.

“I don’t have anything to say about it,” Holmes said when pressed on why he would not answer.

Last week, Holmes said, “I can’t throw it to myself and catch it, otherwise I would.” The comment created a brief controversy as his comments were taken as a slight to Smith.

Holmes took to Twitter the next day to criticize the media and retweet anyone else who did.

“What was said was said and what’s done is done,” Holmes said when asked about Twitter.

As for playing, it does not look good for Holmes. He has not practiced again this week because of an injured hamstring. He said it is up to the doctors when he plays.

“I feel like one day at a time right now, that’s all I can take it is one day at a time,” Holmes said.

TE Kellen Winslow has not spoken to the media all week after playing just 19 snaps against the Falcons and appearing frustrated with his limited role. He has not practiced this week due to his knee injury. The Jets have been careful with Winslow all season, but the knee seems to have taken a turn for the worse as now he is not practicing at all.

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said he was told last week Winslow’s knee was hurting, but the tight end told him he could play against the Falcons. Winslow had one catch in the game, a 1-yard touchdown.
